So, being turned down at my marriage proposal, such as it was, I fled to Colorado with Dino. Determined to not give up I wrote a letter to Patti every day professing my love. At that time as new songs became popular they would publish the lyrics in a small magazine so I would include some of the ones that expressed how I felt about her. After about 6 weeks Patti called me and said: “we are sending Mary out to surprise Dino, would you go to La Junte and pick her up at the bus station?” I said are you coming too? And she said, we only have enough money for one bus ticket. ….oh… Then Mary called Dino and (unbeknown to me) said: “we are sending Patti out to surprise Rich would you go to Colorado Springs and pick her up at the bus station?” Then they called Dino’s little brother and asked him to pick them both up at the Pueblo bus station. JANUARY 15th………I guess it’s over……wait, only 256 days till the first game. FEBRUARY 15th……..this is like waiting for Christmas when I was a kid. MARCH 15th………….argh, the only wonderful thing about this month is mom’s birthday. APRIL 15………………am I going to live long enough to see MICHIGAN play football again. MAY 15th.………………dang, this worse than waiting for Christmas. JUNE 15th……………..76 days left…why does it take soooooooo long? JULY 15th………………this like watching cold molasses drip. Patti said: “I better not go, because I have an awful headache, you can take our room mate.” I had a hard time with that, I didn’t want Patti to think I didn’t care if she went with me, I also didn’t want to embarrass her room mate with the fact that I didn’t want to take her to the dance. I woke up this morning thinking about how the Lord lead me to a job with Varityper and here is the rest of the story: When I worked for the hospital my supervisor was Ben Heard. He was a man in probably his 30s and he and I worked really well together. The hospital administrator was an older man, Mr. Techader, and he didn’t like me at all. I wasn’t serious enough for him. Part of my job was to deliver and pick up the mail from the deferent departments and nursing stations and I was kind of happy go lucky, telling dad jokes and friendly with everybody. He told me many times that I should be more serious about my work. I was a hard worker and many times worked extra days when one of the part timers couldn’t or wouldn’t work. BUT, there were times in the afternoon when there was nothing to do. So a friend would occasionally stop in on his break and I would wad up a piece of paper and we would have a Ball game. We were watching a Detroit Lions preseason game and they introduced 4 new Pro Football Hall of gamers and they interviewed each one. One of them was a young man ( from my prospective) who's brother was already in the hall of fame and he was excited that they were the first brothers in the hall of fame. He had played every game for seven years. He had a neck injury and the dr told him that he would never play again, so now he plays golf for fun. He said: “from a little boy I wanted to play football. That’s all I ever wanted to do. I played youth football, middle school football, high school football, collage football and when got into the pros I had what I always wanted to do”. My joy and my job was playing football and I am so very grateful for that opportunity. It got me to thinking about my life, I might say all I ever wanted to do was fix things. After Tricia was born late at night, I went home to the rest of the children and to sleep. In the morning mom called me and told me that there was a problem with Tricia’s heart and would I come and give her a blessing. I was terrified, this was a life and death situation. I wasn’t up to it but realized I couldn’t hand it off to anyone else. I closed the bedroom door and knelt down in the corner by the closet to pray. I shared with Heavenly Father all the reasons why I couldn’t do this. This came to my mind, “You can give your daughter a blessing because I have been there, I can be here with you.” As I got up and walked across the bedroom it felt like my feet were not touching the floor. I called my home teacher, old brother Cole, and asked him to go with me. We found tiny Tricia in a incubator giving her extra oxygen, we couldn’t take her in our arms, we could only reach her through two ports on each side. We held her in our hands and I gave a blessing.
