Recovery from the bug, the rest of the story…..l

So, being turned down at my marriage proposal, such as it was, I fled to Colorado with Dino.

Determined to not give up I wrote a letter to Patti every day professing my love. At that time as new songs became popular they would publish the lyrics in a small magazine so I would include some of the ones that expressed how I felt about her.

After about 6 weeks Patti called me and said: “we are sending Mary out to surprise Dino, would you go to La Junte and pick her up at the bus station?” I said are you coming too? And she said, we only have enough money for one bus ticket. ….oh…

Then Mary called Dino and (unbeknown to me) said: “we are sending Patti out to surprise Rich would you go to Colorado Springs and pick her up at the bus station?”

Then they called Dino’s little brother and asked him to pick them both up at the Pueblo bus station. So they had us going in different directions on the same day that Dino’s brother was going to pick them up and sneak them back to the farm.

Well, I got to La Junta and the bus came in and, no Mary. I thought, she must have missed a connection and waited 2 hours for the next bus, no Mary, 2 hours later , no Mary. I reluctantly returned to the farm and both girls were hiding in the barn.

i was too happy to be mad. After a week they went back to San Francisco to give the bank their 2 week notice and move to Colorado.

Patti and I went to Denver and stayed with a woman and her daughter. Patti started work immediately with a bank there and I got a job with St Luke’s hospital and soon we’re married and in an apartment of our own. Mom wanted to be a June bride so we were married the last day of June on a Saturday by a Justice of the peace. We didn’t tell her parents or my parents, mom wanted a church wedding so we decided not tell anybody and save our money and go to Mesa and get married again.

  1. Well best laid plans……Mom’s parents were on a trip in August and called her to say they would stop by to see her. I made arrangements to move to the YMCA while they were there and moved back when they left, mom’s brother Chuck stayed with us a few more days so he knew that we were married.

In October we found out we were pregnant and had to make that hard phone call to tell our parents that we had gotten married June 30th and we are going to have a baby.
